An Ox a Goat and Sheep at the Schaghticoke Fair

September 23 2008

I visited the Schaghticoke (NY) Fair today and got some practice sketching animals. In the past I have used photographs as references for animal paintings. Lately I have lost interest in working from photos. I will, instead, work from life. Working from life isn't a big problem when you are drawing humans. You can usually persuade humans to sit still for a little while by offering them fame and money. But what about the other mammals? Will they cooperate? We will see. There is much to be learned here and much fun to be had.
Lesson one: Flies are the enemy. They will not let your subject keep still.
I made about 15 little 4" sketches, here are 3 of them.
