Vanessa with Floral Painting
Sometimes the background that frames the model at sketch club is a blank wall. After you've drawn your 1000th model with blank wall you start to wish for something more. Given enough time we can set up well lit props and draperies. This requires a little too much effort and usually the background is neglected. But what if you used small paintings, packages or other objects and imaged these to be projected behind the model to act as a backdrop? This week I scrounged around the studio and found a small floral painting. I positioned it so that I could see both it and the model. It was only about 14 inches tall but I tried to imagine that it was 8 feet tall and sitting behind Vanessa. (I would credit the artist of the painting but I was unable to make out the signature.)
